Questions people ask
How do I check the HTTP status code of a URL?
Paste the URL (or up to 100 of them, one per line) and press Check. Each URL is requested from our server, redirects are followed one hop at a time, and you see the first status code, every hop, the final URL and the response time.
What is an HTTP status code?
A three-digit number a web server sends back with every response. 2xx means success, 3xx means redirect, 4xx means the request failed because of the client side (for example 404, page not found) and 5xx means the server failed.
What does HTTP status 404 mean?
Not Found: nothing exists at that address. Links pointing to it are broken. Fix them by linking to the new URL, or add a 301 redirect if the page moved on your own site.
What does HTTP status 400 mean?
Bad Request: the server could not understand the request, usually because the URL is malformed (bad encoding, invalid characters) or the request headers are too large.
Why do I get 403 here but the page opens in my browser?
Many sites block automated requests. Try “Check as Chrome” in the user agent menu. If it still answers 403, the site is blocking data-center traffic; trust what you see in your own browser.
Does checking as Googlebot show what Google sees?
Only partly. It sends Googlebot’s user-agent string, which reveals sites that serve bots differently by user agent. Sites that verify Googlebot by IP address will treat us as a normal visitor. Use the URL Inspection tool in Google Search Console for Google’s own view.
