Before you upload

  1. Be sure you need it. Google’s documentation is blunt: if you don’t have a manual action and haven’t built manipulative links, you probably don’t need to disavow anything.
  2. Keep your old file. A new upload replaces the previous file for that property. Paste the old one into the merge box so earlier entries survive.
  3. Upload per property. In Search Console, open the Disavow links tool, choose the property (a domain property or the exact URL-prefix property), and upload the file.
  4. Give it time. Google processes the file as it recrawls the linking pages, which can take weeks.

Not sure whether a link is really there, or whether it’s already nofollow? Check the linking page with the nofollow checker first; nofollowed links don’t need disavowing.

Questions people ask

What is a disavow file?

A plain-text file you upload to Google Search Console’s Disavow links tool, asking Google to ignore specific links to your site. Each line is a full URL or a whole domain written as domain:example.com; lines starting with # are comments.

Do I need to disavow links?

Usually not. Google says it ignores most spammy links automatically and that the disavow tool is for sites with a manual action for unnatural links, or that knowingly bought or built manipulative links. Disavowing good links can hurt you.

What are the format rules?

UTF-8 or 7-bit ASCII text, one URL or domain per line, maximum 2 MB and 100,000 lines. Use domain: without http:// or www to cover every URL on a domain and its subdomains. Uploading a new file replaces the previous one completely.

Should I disavow URLs or whole domains?

For spam sites, disavow the domain: new spam pages keep appearing on the same site, and a domain line covers them all. Use single URLs only when the rest of the site is legitimate, such as one spam comment page on a real publication.

Is my list uploaded anywhere?

No. The generator runs entirely in your browser. You download the file and upload it to Search Console yourself.
